Limitations of the data
Quality issues might include:
- outliers in the spend data, for example particular combinations of spending that may be unusual when compared to the rest of New Zealand,
- bias due to the limited coverage of spend data, and
- limitations of the weighting and forecasting methodology at detailed levels.
The data is subject to revision at the time of publication of the latest Tourism Satellite Account.
The MRTEs depend on electronic ‘card present’ data. However, in the tourism sector (especially accommodation), services are often pre-booked via online methods, which (to date) have fallen outside the available MRTE collection method (e.g. purchases made overseas).

About this dataset
The Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates (MRTEs) provide an estimate of regional monthly expenditure on tourism from both international and domestic consumers.
Method of collection/Data provider
The MRTEs provide an actual spend figure for tourism products. The process uses modelling to estimate all regional tourism spending, and then rakes up the totals to approximate the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) and the International Visitor Survey (IVS) results.
Effectively, the MRTEs are a regionalisation of the Tourism Satellite Account, with airfares and education fees removed.
The totals of the MRTEs align with the Tourism Satellite Account up to the latest Year ending March, by design. Beyond March, the MRTEs are based on observed changes in the value of card transactions i.e. they are a projection off the YE March base.
