Definitions
Electoral roll: list of people who have enrolled to vote. New Zealand has two electoral rolls: the Māori Electoral Roll and the General Electoral Roll.
The general roll is open to all voters. The Māori roll is open to voters of Māori descent. No one can be on both rolls at the same time.
Voters: electors who cast a vote.
Non-voters: electors who were eligible to cast a vote and who did not vote.
Data calculation/treatment
Total enrolled for each electorate includes all people who were enrolled at the date of election day roll closure (including people on the unpublished roll).
The electorate reported for a voter is the electorate that the person was enrolled in at the time of election day roll closure.
The number of non-voters reported is calculated from the total enrolled population and the number of votes cast by electors enrolled in the electorate.
The difference between the total numbers of voters and electors in this report and in the official results is due to a combination of votes disallowed due to the voter not being enrolled, dual votes and clerical errors in the marking of the master roll.
Changes to data collection/processing
From June 2020, enrolment data by electorate reflects the new boundaries and are therefore not always comparable with previous months. 36 electorates are unchanged. The boundaries of 30 general and 5 Māori electorates have been adjusted to some degree, while one new electorate has been created (Takanini).
11 electorates have new or amended names. For more information, please refer to https://elections.nz/democracy-in-nz/historical-events/boundary-review-2019-2020/
