Claims are included where the accident description of the claim includes one of the following keywords, with some variation for spelling:
Playground, Play swing, Flying fox, Play area, Monkey bars, Merry go round, Jungle gym, Seesaw, and Climbing frame
ACC does not have a measure of injury severity. A proxy measure has been used here to give an estimation of severity and classifies claims as follows:
- Claims flagged as fatal are included as fatal,
- Claims flagged as serious injuries are included as serious injuries,
- Claims that have received an entitlement such as weekly compensation , vocational or social rehabilitation or permanent incapacity compensation are included as entitlement payment claims,
- Claims that have received only medical treatment payments are included as medical treatment claims,
- Claims that have received no payments are included as no payment claims. Note that this may include claims where payments have been made under PHAS but no subsequent treatment was provided.
New claims is the count of claims that were lodged with ACC in the specified period. The lodgement date may be any date after the accident occurred.
Active claims is the count of claims for which ACC made a payment in the specified period. The claim may have been lodged in the specified period or any previous period
Data calculation/treatment
All claims included are accepted for cover.
A claim may be active in multiple periods, and will be counted once in each period it is active.
Type of injury and injury site are based on the primary injury diagnosis. A claim may have more than one injury but only the primary one is included here.
Age is based on the client's age at time of claim lodgement and may not be the same age as at the time of the accident
Limitations of the data
Accident description is a non-mandatory free-text field on the ACC45 form. The nature and quality of responses varies. These data should therefore be considered indicative, but not a definitive count of claims.
Exclusions
Please note that Public Health Acute Services (PHAS) payments are not/cannot be provided/included. These costs are for treatment of ACC claims in a public hospital in the acute phase for a covered injury. These costs are paid through bulk payments that ACC make to the Crown. The services are provided under an annual service agreement between the Ministry of Health and ACC.
