The roll data presented in these tables is from the July roll returns.
Ethnicity data is collected as a multiple response. However, in these figures, each person is included only once in the total. People are allocated to one of the ethnic groups they have recorded that they affiliate with, according to a prioritisation rule. The order of priority is Māori, Pacific Peoples, Asian, MELAA (Middle Eastern, Latin American, and African), other groups except European/Pākehā, and European/Pākehā.
International students are treated as a separate ethnic group; therefore subtracting international students from the total roll equals the domestic roll.
'Other' region: correspondence school.

The Ministry provided Figure.NZ with a raw extract of all regions in January 2025.

The Ministry uses school roll data in a number of ways: to fund and staff schools; to support policy analysis, development, and decision making; to monitor the outcomes of the New Zealand education system; and for national and international reporting purposes.
